Vitamin C or ascorbic acid is important in forming collagen, which gives structure to the blood vessels and gums, maintaining the bones and teeth. It also aids in the absorption of iron. Vitamin C is an antioxidant which helps protect the body against the harmful effects of free radicals. Fresh fruits and leafy vegetables are good sources of vitamin C.
Vitamin C deficiency
Severe deficiency of vitamin C causes scurvy. The symptoms of scurvy include swollen and bleeding gums, loosening of teeth, dry itchy skin and dryness of mouth and eyes. This could be prevented by consuming sufficient amount of vitamin C. The Singaporean Dietary Guidelines recommends consuming 3-5 servings of fruits and vegetables a day.
