2009: Mr Suresh Narayanan receiving the Distinction Award from Dr Yaacob Ibrahim, Minister for Environment and Water

For a 3rd consecutive year, Nestlé Singapore has been awarded the distinguished 3R Award for efforts towards a sustainable environment.

Nestlé Singapore was first awarded the 3R Packaging Award (Merit) in 2008, followed by the Distinction Award in 2009. In 2010, we were one of only two companies to be awarded both the Distinction and Platinum 3R Awards in the same year.

Nestlé is committed to reducing the environmental impact of packaging without compromising the safety, quality or consumer acceptance of its products. We actively seek packaging solutions that:

1. Result in the lowest possible weight and volume of packages whilst still maintaining pack integrity.
2. Incorporate new packaging materials and processes that reduce the impact on the environment.
3. Avoid the use of substances that can adversely impact the environment during packaging and disposal.
4. Decrease packaging waste at all stages in the supply chain.
5. Increase the use of recycled materials wherever possible and increase recyclability and compatibility of packages with existing waste management schemes.
In 2010, Nestlé Singapore undertook 11 projects, from reduce packaging waste at source, to recycling packaging waste, utilizing green energy (steam) and educating the public on minimizing packaging waste.

By reducing carton heights and eliminating paper cartons to transport bulk laminate, we were able to save almost 7 tons of paper. We also reduced the heights of our laminate packaging and thus save 14 tons of PET and 380kg of PE materials. By recycling our cocoa bulk bags to contain soya sauce by-products, we saved 1.2 tons of PP and PE materials.

It is our aim that through such efforts, we will contribute less to the carbon footprint and more towards a sustainable environment for future generations.
