The story of milk over the centuries.
There is a lot of evidence that milk has been an essential food for mankind for six millennia. But because milk is highly perishable, the storage and shipping of dairy products have always been a challenge.
All that changed in 1856, when sweetened condensed milk was invented. 10 years later, when the Anglo-Swiss Condensed Milk Company began trading in Europe, a new industry was born. Soon after, Henri Nestlé moved into the condensed milk business.
Another great advance in the milk product industry is much more recent. In 1953 a scientist working in California created a non-fat dry powder that dissolved instantly in water and tasted much like real milk. Today, more than 5 million tonnes of powdered milk are produced worldwide.
